Water desalination
Innovative next-generation desalination technology – EMSF

Water desalination
Overview
EMSF (Environmental Multi-Stage Flash) produces very clean drinking water by vacuum distillation – with waste heat at close to zero running cost
EMSF cleans water to below 1 ppm of dissolved substances – suitable even for babies. With reverse osmosis (RO) it is difficult to keep the output even at 300 ppm, and only with brand-new filters and a well-configured device.
Lower pressure inside the device lowers the boiling point of water, which cuts energy consumption and the cost of the water produced. EMSF can use conventional (thermal, nuclear, hydro) and alternative (solar, wind) energy – and above all waste heat from diesel generators, transformer stations, engine rooms, heat exchangers or incinerators, with no additional CO₂.
As with all thorough water cleaning, drinking water should be re-mineralised. The technology can also keep a chosen share of minerals from the input water, and fertilisers and trace elements can be added to water for irrigation.
Advantages
- Easily expandable modular design
- Simple and fully automatic operation
- Very easy maintenance
- Compact, sturdy construction
- Low consumption of cooling water
- Minimal downtime
- Corrosion-resistant materials where they meet sea or fresh water
Compared with reverse osmosis
- EMSF produces 100 to 300 times cleaner water (in depleted salts)
- RO costs more to buy and – with waste heat on site – much more to run
- RO needs pre-filtration, activated charcoal and chemicals for washouts
- RO is limited by inlet salinity and works only up to +30 °C
- RO needs a qualified operator and regular membrane replacement
- Long-term irrigation with RO water degrades soil
The basic model series
Modular capacity
Distillation units with brine recirculation from 1 to 200 m³ of fresh water a day, arranged as needed – convenient on ships and in confined spaces.
Nearly maintenance-free
Only planned shutdowns for simple cleaning; operating time 350 days a year.
Delivered in a container
No technological or building preparation needed; ready 2–4 months after ordering.
